Thanks so much for all you do for Akitas! My husband and I adore Akitas and am looking to adopt one into our family. You have great information, links, resources, etc... We appreciate having such a great Akita rescue so close to us! The info you have is even great for the "seasoned" Akita owners, such as ourselves! Thanks again! Keep up the good work!

I just had to say, putting the video up of Oreo was a FANTASTIC idea! The photo of him just didn't do him justice. When I saw him tearing around the back yard I couldn't help but smile. You can really see the beautiful akita personality that way. Maybe you can do this for all the dogs? Hope all is well.

We have a 13 year old male Akita, Ivan. Our boy has survived bloat, osteosarcoma (which lead to his back left leg being amputated, and yes he is cancer free)and is now losing both his eyesight and hearing. He has a wheelchair and is adjusting fairly well to it given his age and independent spirit. We love our Ivan almost as much as you folks who adopt all these beautiful friends. God forbid when we do have to say our last goodbye to this old soul..but I know we will come back here and find another true friend, maybe even two!

I am a proud owner of my third Akita, Kiyoko (11 months old). Ani Chan (my 1st Akita) was a gift that was given to me by a close friend not long after my father was killed. When I look back now, I don't see how I could've made it through my dad's death if it weren't for Ani's pure love. I'm not sure about you, but...most dogs don't maintain constant eye contact w/ people. Ani on the other hand, had the ability to permeate my soul with his warm stares; found his place on the other side of my mother's bed as she knelt every night to say her prayers. Nonetheless, two years later I purchased Mikko (female Akita), we certainly had a beautiful life together. Many fun-filled years passed... as both Ani/Mikko carried me and my mom through the heartache of losing my father. I thank them even now....in the spiritual realm. Summer 2004 Ani passed (13yrs) and last Fall 2005 Mikko passed (12yrs). Daily I pass my mantle (and view their beautiful cherry wood boxes (holding their ashes)....I still feel as though they are in my home... still loving me and protecting me. Interesting though,Kiyoko, "acts" exactly like Ani. To be truthful...I think it is Ani...when he passed his body was failing, but his spirit was still young (wanting to play w/his stuffed animals). Anyone else out there have an experience where you think a former pet's spirit came back in another pet?

Bless you for helping animals!! We have 5 rescued dogs including an akita. She is 10 now and we got her at around 12 weeks old. We did not know anything about the breed but we educated ourselves by doing both "right" & "wrong" and have come to love and admire the breed. She is definitely the alpha dog but loves and protects our family pack. I can not imagine not having an akita always in my life. Please keep up the good work.

We have a 6 year old Akita girl. We never intended buying a dog and knew nothing about Akitas but I just couldn't resist when my mum's next door neighbour's dog had a litter of puppies and we have now had her since she was 8 weeks old. She is the most dearest dog you could imagine, and my absolute angel. Despite her size! she is very obedient and lets me do anything to her as in looking at her teeth and her ears etc...in actual fact when she had to have an emergency spaying last year, I was the only one she would let take her drip and stiches out, and she allowed me to do that without a murmur. She is very much a one person dog, ie mine. She takes an instant dislike to some people and we haven't yet worked out what it is that makes her like some and not others. But we would never change her for the world. She means everything to me - she is her mummy's little dumpling. How some people can be so cruel to dogs, and in fact all animals, absolutely beggars belief.

I ope to find a good mate for her here in the close future, I know she'd just make an excellant mother! Thanks for all ya'll do for this wonderful breed! It's still such a shame to see how many are put down because thier owners didn't realize the time they require.

Alida Greenhalgh

Sharptown, Md USA

My husband and I are experienced akita handlers. We currently own two; Timber is 17 yr and Jelly is barely 2. we adopted Tim when he was 6 from a newly blended family, her dogs stayed his dog had to go! We found him in a little dog pen with a little igloo. He is very brave and a true guardian except when it thunders and lightening cracks. Tim sports a nice weight at 92-96#'s. Jelly, however, is our second female rescued from extremely abusive situation. Apparently on a farm in a rural area a couple had a cocker spaniel mill and one uncle had to have an akita. When he became ill and put in a military hospital far away the abuse obviously took on torturous nature. She was already relagated to a tiny pen with barely room to turn around and of course covered in her own fecal matter. She was squirted with a hose and beaten with a shovel. The two tools necessary for cleaning a pen. She has become my husbands dollbaby. She now walks well on a lead but we cannot socialize her with our others as her need to dominate is sketchy, she was never played with so she doen't understand it. But she is very happy with her condominium palace among the dogwood trees and gardens that surround her. Both dogs are nuetered/spayed. And living the good life. We had rescued "niki" from similiar conditions but no beatings. We called her 150#'s of DUH. We got her down to 100#'s in just a few months with science diet rda. And she learned how to play because she didn't know she was supposed to be dominate. But sweet girl she was she passed away due a touch of antifreeze at the local highschool parking lot, I presumed, as that was the only place we had been that weekend. Bless her heart. Where we live, the akita has a bad reputation and we try to help the dog rescue people understand their special nature, so we have successfully adopted out a couple to fine "in town" homes and families. But OH, MY Gosh! Seeing all these excellent dogs in heart renching! I want to love as many as I can. Soon Tim will go to his "happy hunting ground" and we will be ready to take on another. But I will not displace him in heirarchy to another male, and another female right now would definetly disturb Jelly and her place in the pack. We have other little doggies. That she pretends she is alpha over. They are cutie pies that don't really care about that. But I can't take them in the truck together they squabble terrible. And it is not Jelly's fault. I would love to stay in touch with the akita society in case there comes a time when,as stated above, we are ready for another male. Or if you need a foster home situation in our rural area we would try our best to accommodate. Blessings, Mrs. Greenhalgh

What a wonderful job you are doing! I just adopted my first rescue Akita a year ago, after having four show Akitas over thirty years, two of whom had autoimmune problems. Rescue is the only way to go! The convenience of having an Akita with whom I could immediately take a 10 mile hike cannot be overstated. Sorry - convenience DOES have something to do with it -- it was heck taking only one-two mile walks while my other dogs were puppies. My rescue is my best friend and helper. Falling asleep to the sound of his snoring is better than any tranquilizer!

i admit that i am a "cat person", but we have been babysitting our son's mixed breed akita since June while he's awaiting new orders from the Navy and I love this dog! Homer is a great pal to our german shepherd and respects our 2 elderly female cats. Last weekend, when hurricane Rita passed over SE Texas, he remained as close as possible to my side. He's a silly boy who makes us laugh and we will miss him if our son takes him to his next duty station (stateside).

Her name was Tachikawa (Tachi). We breed her when we lived in Florida. She had two pups. We named them Kuma and Yuki. That was back in the late 70's early 80's. It so strange to see the two on your website together. They, of course, are not our Kuma and Yuki. Akitas are a wonderful breed. Very loyal and loving. Mine were wonderful with my children as both the dogs and the children grew up. God bless you for helping these homeless beautiful animals!!

I've had my akita (Kayla) for six months now. She is 2 1/2 years old and is a great companion. I would like to adopt a akita so she would have a playmate, but it would be too expensive for me. Keep up the good work with everything you are doing.

My Beloved Toshiba: I am still trying to get on with my life. You were laid to rest 12/16/04. You were 13 years old, I was blessed; I knew you had the great life. You had no ailments, it was just old age and it was your time, and I do Thank God for that.... but I misssss you so badly still. I know you are looking down on me and wishing me well as I was there for you always. I aways told you baby! Mommy was their for you at the start and she was there for you>>> Kiki! I love you more than people!!!....... I will meet you one day and than mommy will be happy too.. Until Sweetface!! Smile!!!... Like me for now!!

It's so sad all of the things that happen to these poor dogs! I am lucky to have a one year old (akita but pretty much like a child) at home. I love her to pieces and if I could I would find her a lovely male companion like Angus (especially Artemis if I didnt have a bitch already) I would adopt one of these beautiful dogs.

We rescued our Akita, Diego, once. But couldn't rescue him from age. He was born Jan 29, 1993 and went to sleep Jul 12, 2004. We found him in a pet store at 3 months and a week, definitely getting too big for the cage. I carried him through the Mall, all 27 pounds of him. He shivered in the back seat of the car sitting next to my daughter. Back home, we turned the spots on and took him out in our fenced backyard. If he'd been a person, he'd have thrown his arms up and yelled "Freedom!". He ran around the yard biting the grass like a crazy person. He grew to be a 120-pound joy. The "gentle giant" our vet called him. He was all Akita: feline, aloof, dignified, noble. He was our joy for over 11 years. He loved to walk on the leash. He's been gone now for a little more than 4 months. His ashes are in the living room next to those of his giant predecessor, Duke, a 175-pound Shephard mix. The house is empty...again. The time is near. We can't replace Diego anymore than we could replace Duke. We'd never try. But, we're dog people. Big dog people. After the Holidays, we hope to share our home and lives with another big guy. We've found your site to be both impressive and very informative. We've learned things we didn't know, despite having a big, male Akita for as long as we did. And we've seen and read things that brought tears back to our eyes. We were lucky to have him, and your site reminds us of that. Thanks.

Saturday 10/23, a little Akita who was in trouble came to the front door of my apartment and wanted to come in. She was so skinny with matted hair and it was obvious she just had puppies. She was so sweet and tired we knew we had to do something. To make a long story short, we were going to nurse her back to good health and find her a home with the help of Jodi from Akita Rescue (who was such a big help - thank you!). The little Akita didn't like that idea, she liked our home well enough and didn't care that we already had two dogs and worked her way right into our home and hearts. She is doing excellent and loves to play with the other two dogs. I'm thankful that if we weren't able to keep her, there was a way to help her through Akita Rescue. Thanks!

When I took my newly adopted ,county pound, dog to the vet for his first big check up a woman ,who said she breeds Akita, said my dog looked like one and to check out this site. What pedigree a dog has never mattered to me so I jotted down the website to be polite and threw it in my purse. Now it is 3 months later and after getting to know Bogart better I'm finding him to be a exceptional loyal loving animal. So I wanted to find out all I could about the breed and your website did that and alot more. I will eventually be looking for a canine campion for Bogart and this website is on the top of my list. Thanks for caring so much for these wonderful gifts God gave us.

I love Akita's, and miss my Bella very much. We had her for 11 years when she got very sick. She's been gone 5 months, and not a day goes by that me and my two children don't miss her. We are looking for another one,and decided to adopt this time. The dog must have a good temperment, get along with another(med. sized) female dog, and should like children. I know the breed very well, and feel confident that I could train another. Thank you.

My girl, DAnte-Inu(French-Japanese for DevilDog, we were Marines.}:) ), will be 11 years old this year. She recently, unfortunately, tested, tentatively, positive for cancer. I've been owned by her, heart and soul, since she was 4 months old and will dearly miss her when she decides its her time to leave us. She acts like a 5-6 yr old, according to the vet, who was amazed by her, well who isn't when they first met her? }:) Told the husband, I want another Akita when its time, no ifs, ands, or buts. I can't imagine life without Dante or an Akita, period, in it and hoped to be able to adopt a rescue myself when the time finally comes.

I need your help, and will be contacting Akita Rescues. I am just hoping writing here may just get the right person's attention. My boyfriend and I have been fostering a stray Akita Mix for a week now. George was found by the village police department almost two weeks ago, but I felt he needed some love and a good chance. We brought him home with hopes of finding him a home, but we cannot keep him in the house at this point and he is a liability to just be given to anyone. He shows no aggression to us outside, but the vet was a different story. Today he got to visit the groomer, who was absolutely amazing with him, but it took 3 hours just to shampoo and dry his coat; we took a lot of breaks to calm him down. He sure is beautiful now!!! He is a sweetheart, but he has never been given any instruction. From what we can tell he has been kept out on a chain his whole life, which is where we have to keep him. At this time we are able to keep him in the kennel outside at night and run him with our other dog 2-3 hours a day. I cannot bring him in the house at this point. I have a dog, 2 cats, and some amphibians, so I can't risk it. George needs a better situation than what we are able to give. We think he maybe about 5 years old. He just received his shots and blood tests on Monday and was groomed today. He is not nuetered but needs to be ASAP; I can't afford it. He looks exactly like an Akita except for his eyes; they are big, round, and brown. His coat is black and white, so I initially thought he was a Husky Mix (today was the first I heard of Akitas). He weighs 83 pounds as of this week, but I think we can pack a few more on him. He loves to run with my male dog, weighing in at a wee 50 pounds, and he listens fairly well on and off the leash. He is too sweet to be put to sleep, so I cannot take him to the humane society. He is not ready for a family or a home, so I am going to assume he would just be put to sleep. I have only one week to find George a home!!! We are moving into a business oriented environment and I cannot take him with me. I will drive anywhere to save him. Please help George find help and a home. Thanks. You can contact me at 920 979 9310.

phillipburg, nj USA

Hello, my name is Jackie. We have owned an akita named Sheba for about 2 and 1/2 years so far, because when we got her she was about 5 months. She was at a pet store and kept tuggin on my moms jacket and mine. We weren't really looking for a dog at the moment, but we saw how old she was and felt so bad because we think she was beatin bye a man then broughten back. Mostly because she is very skiddish of men and will bite them if they tuch the back of her neck. That is the reason we got her and I am so very happy we did because a few months later my dog had to be put down. Now Sheba is my dog and is recovering from being hit by a car from about 1 month and 1/2 ago. They thought she wasn't going to survive, but she pulled through and she is home doing very well. I decided to look up akitas on the website and found this and I'm so happy to see a site for akitas and rescuing them. I love mine so much and if I lost her it would have been the hardest. I see all these akitas and I can not wait till I'm out of high school and I gone to college then have a sucessful career just so I can afford a nice size house so I can own some rescued akitas because I love them so much. Soon I will most likely make a website of my Akita and I will come back and sign this guestbook with the site. Goodbye for now..and best luck to all of the akitas and the people who help them. --Jackie--

I would like to commend you for the work that you do. We decided after our cat passed away to get an Akita. We picked up Nikko, 3.5 month old, and found out 8 days later that he had four eye diseases. Nikko had cataract surgery at 6 mths old and developed full blown glaucoma in his right eye at 11 months old. Nikko now has a "glass eye", but absolutely nothing slows him down. We called the breeder and was told to bring him back and she would take him on the "ride to hell" and I could pick up the older pup I had looked at. We picked up Kumo just 8 days after Nikko and our lives have never been better. There is no love greater than the love of an animal. I am grateful everday for the joy my two boys give to me. Keep up the good work. Glad to see others recognize the value of a truly beautiful, lovable animal as the Akita.

I adopted one of your orphans two years ago. It was Rosie. She is an absolute ANGEL! We just moved to a new home where she is the hit of the neighborhood! The kids there love her and she especially loves her new yard and park across the street! I just want to thank you again for giving me the opportunity to have such a great dog like Rosie!

My two Akitas are doing great together. The new one, Niki, is very smart and has made herself so agreeable we have a good transition. She and Teddy (Tomo) have worked out their problems and we have two of the most wonderful dogs anyone could ever want. I don't know what I will do when they go to the Rainbow Bridge. My heart will go with them, for sure.

I love your website! I have a 5 year-old female Akita who is an absolute joy to our family! She is gentle and very well socialized. I have often thought she would enjoy having another Akita as a playmate. I will check back to see which Akitas become available that may fit in our home.

Your site is delightful. It is great to see people so interested in helping to find homes for such a great breed. I would like to know if there is a rescue close to my area. My husband has always liked Akitas and would be interested in helping in the near future.

I am coming on the other end of this book, I am having to give up my Akita Yoshi for personal reasons. I love him to death and I agree that they are wonderful family pets. Should I ever have the opportunity to get one in the future, I definetly would adopt one of these awesome animals from the Adoption Organization. I just wanted to say that I have been emailing back and forth with one of the people who work for this organization and have really appreciated all of her help! This has been a very difficult decision and transition for me and I have been comforted in knowing that she is there to send any concerns to. I applaud the people who work to make the lives of these Akita's better! I applaud this site!! Jessica.

I just want to say that I love this website. I got my very first akita and i love her to death. She is so speacial. She knows when something is boring me and she is right there trying to get me to play and when i come home at night she is right there giving her little greeting growl. I will never give her away and I know that when she passes I will get another one. People have told me stories why I should have not gotten her. but I will tell you i am so glad that I didn't listen to them. I love my akita and She is the cutes of all akita.. thank you

I have an Akita myself and am simply in love with my "girl." Having her has made me fall in the love with the breed. I rescued her from almost certain death from our animal shelter, seeing as not alot of people want such a big dog and responsibility. I'm so glad I did. The only problem is, they're like potato chips, you can't have just one. I was curious to know if you adopted your dogs out nationwide, for those willing and eager to get a rescue dog from you. I don't know if I'm quite ready to have another yet being as though I'm still settling into my new home, but if in the future I was interested, if it would be possible. I find I like adult dogs better than puppies. I would greatly appreciate any info you could give me. Thank you. Sincerely, Kate Ingram

As a wedding present, my husband rescued an Akita/Lab mix. She has become the most wonderful girl in the world. She is lovable and very protective of the two of us. She also is small she is only about 45 pounds at one year. I want to say to all those who are looking into adopting one, they are the best dogs in the world.
