ARMAC's Available Orphans
About these orphans
All of the dogs on this page are in ARMAC foster homes. They have been evaluated by an ARMAC volunteer, and are considered adoptable to an appropriate home.
Our goal is to find permanent homes for these Akitas, so your application will be considered very carefully to find a dog that will be a good fit for your home. If you are interested in adopting one of these dogs:
- Read this article on Akita Temperament. This is required reading before adoption.
- Read this information packet about Akitas. This is required reading before adoption.
- Fill out the adoption application and send it to ARMAC.
- When you adopt an orphan, you will need to sign an adoption contract, possibly amended with special requirements for the particular orphan. By signing the contract, you will be stating that you have read and understood the required reading material listed above.
It can take 2-6 weeks for us to process your application, and we do not normally place dogs more than about 6 hours drive from the Washington, DC area.
Please note that if a fenced yard is required for a dog, ARMAC does not consider electric or "invisible" fencing sufficient, as these systems do not work with high-drive dogs such as Akitas, and can injure or kill dogs.

Corky
- Please sponsor me!
Location: Virginia
Last update: 6/20/2007
Corky, aka Cutie pie, is a spayed female, DOB Feb 2007. This lovely little girl already knows how to sit for treats and is very food oriented, so training should be fairly easy. She is very willing to please, does some submission urination, charms everyone she meets wherever she goes, does not bother my kitties, does fine with other dogs when properly introduced and already a watch dog, letting us know whenever anyone passes in front of the house. She is a new arrival, so we are just getting to know her. She will be available around the end of July, 2007.
Princess
Location: West Virginia
Last update: 6/28/2007
Princess is about a year old, proud and confident. She is crate trained and run trained, and walks well on lead. She's good in the car and at the vet. She LOVES people, and loves to play. She seems to have a pretty strong prey drive and should not be placed in a home with small animals.
She's up to date on shots and spayed.
Maverick

Location: West Virginia
Last update: 7/26/2006
Maverick is a neutered male, 8 years old (born April 1998), red and white pinto with broken ears. He has not shown any agression towards other dogs or cats. He has a minor eye injury which may indicate he was a traffic victim sometime earlier in his life.
He came in with Silas, and the two would do great in a home together.
Oreo

Location: Maryland
Last update: 7/1/2007
Watch him in action! Video 1 Video 2 Video 3
Oreo is a Good looking 5 year old black and white male Akita. He is very well behaved, and both crate and house trained. He walks well on lead, but it is a new experience for him. He is learning basic commands, and could use some formal training. He is playful but not aggressive with cats, but he does not get along with other dogs.
He loves kids and people, and enjoys romping in the yard (running around like a crazy dog). What he likes most is to be in the house with the people. (Although he loves kids, he has some possessive behaviors, so he should go to a home without small children.)
Roxi

Location: Virginia
Last update: 2/22/2006
Roxi is an 8 month old girl (born June 2005). "Miss Bright Eyes" is a very sweet girl who warms up quickly to people she meets. She is very energetic and loves playing with my young males, leaping over them like a gazelle. She takes corrections well, crates, walks fairly well on leash, knows how to sit and down. She rides well in a car. She is curious about kitties, chases the ones who run, but will leave them alone on command.
Tamira

Location: Virginia
Last update: 2/21/2007
Tamira is a 3 year old female. Like most Akitas, she is initially aloof, but she has become very loving with her foster family and is one of the sweetest Akitas I've ever met. She is house trained, crate trained, knows basic commands, and walks well on a lead.
She gets along well with other dogs and tries to play with cats. Due to her exuberance, she should be supervised when interacting with other animals. She loves to be outside, and she really loves to play - her ideal home would be one where she gets lots of attention and play time.
Mikey
- Please sponsor me!
Location: Virginia
Last update: 5/24/2005
Mikey is a neutered male, approximate age 12-14 months old. He is a white/cream colored young male Akita. He was rescued from a local shelter after he was taken from his owners on a humane seizure. Mikey was chained up in a backyard with little food or water. When we took him from the shelter, he was only 80 pounds, probably at least ten pounds underweight. He still has plenty of growing ahead of him and will probably top out at 110 pounds or more.
Mikey is intelligent, willful, and loves to play. He loves attention and enjoys being petted. He is a large dog who is strong in both body and spirit, and because of his history, he needs a home with an experienced Akita owner to help him learn proper house dog manners and social skills. He is making steady progress in his foster home and has all the makings of a wonderful companion.
He would do great in a home with a single adult or young couple. Because he is so enthusiastic and powerful, he should go to a home without young children (under 16) or other pets.
Autumn
- Please sponsor me!
Location: Virginia
Last update: 3/1/2006
Autumn is a super-sweet 2 year old female Akita. She is housetrained and knows basic obedience commands and even some tricks, such as "shake". She'll do anything for a hot dog!
Autumn wants to be the next American Idol! She loves to sing, and will chime right in if you sing to her. She is loyal and has a wonderful sense of humor.
She needs to go to a home where she will be an only pet and won't be with young children. She also needs a securely fenced yard.
